Solar System Servicing - 5 Checks That Will Save You Money

30/7/2020

While your solar power installation will generally require little maintenance, it is very important that regular checks are carried out to ensure your system is at it's optimum performance. After all, you had it installed to save money!

The most common problem we find when servicing systems is dust and grime build up on the panels, which can dramatically effect the efficiency of your panels.

It is suggested you can lose up to 20% of power generation over time if your panels are not cleaned regularly.  This is due to dirt and grime build up, making it difficult for the panels to absorb the sunlight, thus decreasing your system's efficiency.  Along with grime and dirt, shading problems from nearby tree growth is another common issue resulting in decreased panel efficiency.

We recommend that the home owner check the panels quarterly for dirt, debris and shading to optimise their output.  In addition to the quarterly checks you can conduct yourself, we recommend your solar professional carries out a solar service every twelve months.

The system service will:
  1. Inspect the integrity of the electrical components
  2. Inspect the seals, connections, cables, bolts and other fasteners used
  3. Check the mechanical integrity of conduits and verify the insulation integrity of cables installed without conduits
  4. Identify any signs of browning, fractures, moisture penetration and frame corrosion, and
  5. Clean the panels to ensure optimum production

If you can identify any pending issues early, you can save yourself money on repairs and rectify any items that may get worse over time.

Along with saving money, regular inspections can ensure safety of the system is upheld.   As your solar system is in the weather 24 hours a day, water ingress and storms can cause issues for your electrical safety if there has been damage to your system that you are not aware of.

In addition to your yearly inspections, system monitoring can assist with early identification of electrical safety issues. There are a range of monitoring options available depending on your inverter.

If you are considering getting your system inspected, we are able to do this without contact so there is no concern with having this completed for you while social distancing is still playing an important role in our communities. Strict hygiene standards are being followed on all our current job sites for the health and safety of our staff and our clients.
